Sept. 29 job fair at Pearland Recreation Center to include almost 50 employers across wide range of fields

A Sept. 29 job fair staged by the Pearland Economic Development Corp. and other entities has garnered participation from almost 50 employers across a broad range of fields, and the corporation is seeking to spread word about the event to potential job seekers in the region.

“We do have a lot of people commuting to Pearland for work,” said Mou Sarkar, the EDC’s workforce director. “We have very diverse career options here.”

The free event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pearland Recreation Center, 4141 Bailey Road, will host representatives from companies in industries including manufacturing, healthcare, construction, government, hospitality, automotive, education, administrative, transportation and insurance.

Other partners in the fair are the Pearland Chamber of Commerce and the employment search service Workforce Solutions Pearland.

In discussions with local businesses, Sarkar said, “We kept hearing a lot of requests to assist in getting their workforce needs met.”

Many Pearland employers are having challenges meeting production needs because of difficulty finding workers, she said.

The chamber’s president and CEO, Jim Johnson, noted that the city’s unemployment rate of 3.7 percent is listed as the lowest in the region in Workforce Solutions’ Houston Area Employment Situation report for August.

“I think those numbers reflect that companies are still hiring and using multiple platforms like the job fair and the chamber’s job board to post job opportunities in our community,” he said.

Businesses that have committed to attend the fair include: Lonza, Endress+Hauser, Kelsey-Seybold, Burns and McDonnell, the city of Pearland, Aggreko, Emerson, Third Coast Terminals, Kemlon, Hilton Garden Inn, Marriott, Keating Toyota, Alvin Community College, Waffle House, Dover Precision Components, Brask Inc, Allied Fire Protection and Portable Air.

“We are almost sold out in all the booths,” Sarkar said.

Available job openings include process and field technicians; construction workers; heating, ventilation and air-conditioning technicians; welders; machinists; and customer service and sales representatives.

Also open are positions for drivers, warehouse workers, project managers and engineers.

Job applicants should come prepared with several copies of their resume and be ready to interview with potential employers. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged but not required. On-site registration will be available the day of the event.

There also will be opportunities to receive advice about resume creation, interviewing skills and a chance to win door prizes.

“We hope that through the job fair we are able to showcase the variety of jobs in Pearland,” Sarkar said.

“We plan to have at least two such events every year going forward,” she said. “I think this is a great way to get the community to experience the variety of opportunities in Pearland.”
