OhioHealth and Strayer University Unveil Grads to Work Program

OhioHealth, a not-for-profit health system based in Columbus, Ohio, has partnered with Strayer University on the University’s Grads to Work program. The Grads to Work program connects current and soon-to-be high school graduates from underserved communities with talent-seeking employers and no-cost degree pathways for the student. Through the program, participants are eligible to be hired by OhioHealth into full-time, entry-level jobs such as supply chain technicians, sterile processing technicians, and more.

“As a leading employer in the state of Ohio, we want OhioHealth to be the place people want to work,” says Patti Wilson, OhioHealth Project Manager for Academic Partnerships. “We are always searching for unique ways to find diverse associate candidates to fill crucial roles that best serve our patients and their families. We’re proud to partner with Strayer University’s Grads to Work program to help strengthen our state and organization by offering entry-level career support, while ensuring a talent pipeline to serve our communities and making higher education more attainable.”

This partnership supports students with education and career entry at OhioHealth. All students participating in the program must complete a workforce readiness course through Strayer University preparing them to create an effective resume, learn successful interview tactics, and apply strategies to increase their problem-solving and productivity skills. If hired by OhioHealth, participants work full-time (32-40 hours) and start their post-secondary education with free access to Strayer affiliate, Sophia Learning, an online, on-demand, self-paced learning platform providing college-level general education courses. After six months of employment, participants will begin their selected Strayer University associate degree program in fields such as business administration, information technology, marketing or accounting at no cost through the use of OhioHealth’s Education Benefits program.


“We’re proud to partner with an esteemed organization such as OhioHealth to provide a strong foundational education for young adults looking to obtain entry-level positions,” said Strayer University President Andréa Backman. “Providing students an opportunity to earn a degree, while working for an employer willing to support their education can help propel economic mobility for these students.”

To date the program with OhioHealth has resulted in filling full-time positions for sterile processing, patient escorts, environmental services associates, nutrition services, patient services assistants, and office specialists.

“The fact that Grads to Work prepared me for a job at OhioHealth and that tuition reimbursement was offered through OhioHealth, made it very appealing,” says Brandon K. Copper, OhioHealth associate and Grads to Work participant. “So far Grads to Work is great, and I believe it has helped open a number of opportunities. I’ve been able to improve my professional emails and communication with coworkers. I have already recommended the program to peers, and parents as well.”
